Kerosene Lanterns
The kerosene lanterns are used when electric is not available. In this petroleum oil or kerosene oil is used as a source of fuel. They are used in case of emergency and for shorter duration. Kerosene lanterns can be carried from one place to another and they are handy to use. Kerosene oil is extracted from petroleum product that has no harmful fumes for the humans. Robert Edwin Dietz discovered the first kerosene lantern in 1840. Other benefits of this lantern is it is portable, safe, less cost and weatherproof.
A kerosene lantern consists of glass envelope, handle, a cotton rolled wick, a knob for changing the brightness and a container for storing kerosene fuel. The glass envelope protects the flame from heavy wind. Cotton rolled wick is used as lighting source. The knob changes the height of the wick and controls the intensity of the light. It uses the principle of carburetion where oxygen is mixed with gaseous forms of kerosene. Upper body of the lantern has small holes through which the hot air being lighter escapes through these holes. Underneath the wick holder again small vents are provided for fresh air to enter and keep the flame burning. The kerosene oil is pulled up due to capillary action and the wick burns still the kerosene is available in the container.
In case of kerosene lantern there is no risk of fire as it is covered from all the side when compared with a candle. Kerosene lanterns are used by trekkers to find the way through dark forests and during night. When electric lamps were not available in most of the villages and remote areas this kerosene lamps came as handy media to see through the dark. A next benefit of this lantern is that it can be carried from one place to another and are cheap when compared to other forms of light source. Now days we can get kerosene lanterns in various shapes, sizes and decorative designs. Even some of the political parties have their party symbol as lantern thus one can imagine how important it is. In India it is widely used in remote villages for carrying out their routine jobs. The kerosene lamp can burn through out the night with less than half a liter of kerosene oil that costs only five to six rupees. It is very cheap when compared to electricity bill. For kerosene lantern it is one time investment that 50 to 60 rupees where as in case of electrical connection it is huge amount at the start as a deposit and there after also we have pay monthly bills for consumed units. Now days there are power crises all over the world and there is no surety of 24 hors continuous supply. In case of kerosene lanterns there is no chance of supply failure and but for the very marginal amount of expenditure on kerosene fuel.
Thus one can say that the kerosene lanterns are the safest and cheapest way of in lighting the house. It not only saves the natural sources like water and coal but also saves pollution and huge amount spend on reactors for generating electricity.
