Chinese Lantern
Chinese lantern is very important in Chinese culture. Chinese celebrate the Lantern Festival which is celebrated according to the Chinese New Year. This lantern festival is known as Yuanxiao Jie. This Yuanxiao Jie is known for the beautiful Chinese Lanterns as well as Sweet Dumplings. The celebration of New Year lasts for two weeks. People along with their relatives come together at a common place and celebrate this festival. Lots of beautiful Chinese lanterns are displayed by the people. There are lantern competitions where beautiful Chinese lanterns are displayed which are made by the people around. Small children are also allowed to participate in this competition. Also on the night of the festival, the people can watch dancing lions and dragon, Chinese games and some riddle, and firecrackers.
Along with entertainment and display of beautiful Chinese lanterns, there is another importance of lantern festival or Yuanxiao Jie of eating small dumping rice flour balls. These rice flour balls are called as Yuanxiao or Tang Yuan.
In Chinese culture the color of the lantern plays a vital role. The position and color of these lanterns are used as a communication link by the Chinese people.
The red color is considered to be powerful and important, so if it is placed outside your house it indicates about the marriage or the birth. The blue color represent the declining power or ill health, this indicates someone is ill in the house similarly the white color signifies power of elimination or death, so if the white sash is draped across the door, it indicates that the family is in grief.
The Chinese people make use of the simple lantern in daily life to light up the house, in shops and also to hang on boats. There is another festival called Mid-autumn Festival where these lanterns are made of various styles which differ from the Yuanxiao Jie festival. In the mid-autumn festival the lantern are made in fanciful shapes of animals, fruits, and flowers. Such lanterns depict the scenes of history or patriotism. Also it has riddle on them along with poems.
The following steps are followed to make the Chinese lantern:
Material required for Chinese lantern is
* Colored paper which can be a construction paper or the beautiful gift wrapping paper.
* Scissors for paper cutting
* Adhesive or tape for sticking
* Staple Pins
Steps are as follows:
* Initially fold a rectangular paper in half and make a thin but long rectangle.
* Cut the paper in series along the folding line not at the edge.
* Now unfold your paper, make use of adhesive of stapler to join the short edges of paper.
* Cut the paper strip which should be 6 inches long and 1/2 inches width.
* Stick this paper strip to the end of Chinese lantern with the help of adhesive or stapler to handle the lantern.
