The jack o lantern was first practiced based on an old Irish myth of legend of Jack. Jack was the smart farmer who was irritating and wicked. The story of the jack is very interesting. Jack once invited the Devil to have a drink with him. Jack did not want to pay for his drink, so Jack carefully influenced the Devil to turn himself into a coin so that Jack could use the coin to buy their drinks. The Devil once did agree to do this. Then jack kept the money and dropped it into his pocket, which did not allow the devil to change back to his original form. Then jack played a trick on the devil. Jack finally allowed the devil to change back on one condition that, devil would not trouble Jack for one year and when jack will die the devil will not claim the soul of jack.

Once again in the same year jack tricked the devil. Jack asked the devil to climb the tree to have apple. When the devil climbed the tree, jack carved a cross on the back of the tree. This did not allow the devil to come down. Finally jack agreed to free the devil, when he promised Jack not to bother him for another decade.

Finally when jack died, jack arrived at the gate of the heaven. Saint Peter told him that he was not eligible for entry. Standing at the gate of hell, devil greeted him. As the devil had promised, he did not allow jack to entry hell.
Devil sent jack back along with a burning coal to show him a way. Then Jack carved out one turnip for him self and placed the burning coal inside, and kept looking out for the place on earth to rest.

The Irish peoples referred this ghostly figure as "Jack of the Lantern," and then, simply "Jack O' Lantern. " People have been making Jack O' Lanterns at Halloween for hundreds of years.
